Apple BBQ Sauce

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small white onion
  • 1 medium apple Choose an apple that breaks down during the cook.
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup apple juice
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tsp mustard powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder Make it spicier by using cayenne pepper.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Equipment

  • 1 small saucepan
  • 1 grater or immersion blender
  • 1 glass jar (needs to hold 3 cups worth)
  • 1 measuring spoons
  • 1 measuring cups
  • 1 wooden spoon

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel, core and mince apple (immersion blender works great)
  2. Peel and mince onion.
Cook
  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over a medium heat.
  2. Stir in the onion and apple and cook till tender.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, apple juice, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, molasses, honey, mustard powder, chili powder and garlic powder.
  4. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low.
  5. Simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally, make sure it doesn't burn.
  6. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  7. Use right away but better if left overnight in the fridge to develop the flavours.
Storage
  1. Store in a glass jar in the fridge. Will last approx 1 week.
  2. Can also place in sandwich bags and freeze. Will last approx 2 months.
